London, September 21, 2017 - Friends, family, and admirers gathered in Greenwich, London, to commemorate the life and accomplishments of Harry Blundred OBE, a trailblazing entrepreneur who revolutionised public transportation in the United Kingdom.
The memorial service paid tribute to Mr Blundred's pioneering spirit and visionary contributions to the transportation industry.
Born in Stoke-on-Trent, Mr Blundred began his illustrious career in 1962 as a conductor with Potteries Motor Traction. He then worked for East Midland before joining Devon General in 1983, a pivotal move that marked the beginning of his transformative journey in the world of transportation.
Mr Blundred is perhaps best known for introducing the 'Blundred's Breadvans,' a fleet of high-frequency minibuses that became iconic in Exeter.
These minibuses, renowned for their reliability and efficiency, fundamentally changed the landscape of public transportation in the region. His innovative approach and commitment to providing accessible, community-focused services earned him a reputation as a visionary in the field.
Notably, Harry Blundred played a key role in leading a management buyout of the old Devon General. This move made Devon General the first bus company in the country to be privatised, a significant development brought about by the government's decision to divide the National Bus Company before deregulation.
The memorial service served as a poignant reminder of Mr Blundred's enduring legacy and the impact he had on the transportation industry.
Friends and colleagues shared stories of his dedication, unwavering determination, and entrepreneurial spirit, highlighting his role in shaping the future of public transportation.
Mr Blundred passed away on August 23 in Barbados due to complications from surgery. His death marked the end of an era in the transportation sector, leaving behind a lasting legacy that will continue to benefit communities and passengers for generations to come.
