Yellow rain and wind warnings are in force across the South West of England as Storm Bram moves in.

The Met Office says a deep area of low pressure will push into the region from Monday evening, with conditions expected to worsen overnight.

Cloud is already thickening across the South West, and forecasters warn that heavy downpours could lead to localised flooding and difficult travel conditions, particularly on higher ground.

Strong southerly winds will also develop, bringing gales to exposed coastal areas as Storm Bram tracks north. Despite the unsettled weather, it will stay very mild, with temperatures holding at around 11°C overnight.

Tuesday (9 Dec) will begin mostly cloudy with rain and drizzle, still heavy at first over upland areas. The gales linked to Storm Bram are expected to ease through the afternoon, leaving a windy but brighter end to the day. Temperatures will rise to an exceptionally mild 15°C.

Mid-week forecast

  • Wednesday: Drier and brighter with sunny intervals and only isolated showers.
  • Thursday: Largely dry with bright spells; staying mild.
  • Friday: Rain likely at times and often windy, though still milder than average for early December.
