A new feature film charting five decades of Torbay’s vibrant music scene will premiere later this month, shining a spotlight on the artists, venues and unforgettable moments that helped shape the Bay’s cultural identity from 1975 to 2025.

Directed by local producer John Tomkins, the film takes viewers on a cinematic journey through Torquay, Paignton and Brixham, weaving together more than 100 interviews with musicians, venue owners, promoters and music fans aged between 13 and 90.

Filmed across over 50 locations, the documentary captures stories of legendary gigs, career-launching performances, radio roadshows and memorable visits from global superstars - including ABBA - that left a lasting mark on generations of local music lovers.

Thanks to the generosity of contributors, the film also features rare images, posters, handbills and video footage from Torbay’s music past.

John said the project is a “collaboration with the community”, created alongside people who have lived, loved and shaped the music scene across five decades. “It’s a tribute to Torbay’s enduring love for live music,” he added, highlighting the powerful generational legacy carried forward by performers and fans alike.

The premiere will take place on Wednesday 26 November at the Royal Lyceum Theatre, Torquay. Doors open at 6.30pm ahead of a 7.15pm screening.

Live music will be provided by Music Factory CIC before the film begins, and John will introduce the screening alongside a mystery guest connected to Torbay’s live music history.

All proceeds from ticket sales will support Unleashed Theatre Company and Music Factory CIC, two organisations that provide music, theatre and singing workshops for people of all ages across Torbay.
