The cold, concrete floor of the Big Bank at St James Park was home for the night to a group of hardy fundraisers who took part in the Big Sleep Out to raise awareness of homelessness in Exeter.
Organised by Exeter City Community Trust, the partner charity of Exeter City Football Club, the event aimed to shed light on the daily struggles faced by those without a permanent home, while raising vital funds for the charity’s Supported Housing programme.
So far, the group has raised more than £5,500, with donations still coming in.
Launched in 2021, the Supported Housing programme provides intensive support and safe accommodation for people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. The goal is to equip residents with the skills, confidence and knowledge to maintain their own tenancy and live independently.
The service takes a person-centred approach, helping individuals develop life skills, build confidence and overcome barriers to long-term stability.
Jamie Vittles, chief executive of Exeter City Community Trust, said:
“Thank you to everyone who braved the cold and gave up their beds to help support our work. Through our Supported Housing Service, we offer safe accommodation, guidance, and support to help individuals rebuild their lives and gain independence.”
The Big Sleep Out not only raised much-needed funds but also shone a light on the issue of homelessness in the city, reinforcing the Trust’s commitment to supporting some of the most vulnerable members of the Exeter community.
