Sleep Out at Exeter City
People across Devon are being invited to brave a night in the cold at Exeter City’s St James Park stadium to help raise vital funds for those facing homelessness.
Exeter City Community Trust’s annual Big Sleep Out takes place on March 20 and challenges participants to swap their warm beds for sleeping bags, spending the night outdoors inside the famous football ground. The event aims to raise both funds and awareness for people experiencing homelessness across the city.
Money raised will support the charity’s Supported Housing programme, which helps individuals who are homeless or at risk of homelessness to rebuild their lives, maintain stable accommodation and move towards independence.
Each year, more than 600 people in Exeter experience homelessness alongside multiple disadvantages. Since launching the Supported Housing programme in 2021, the Trust has provided intensive one-to-one support to people from a wide range of backgrounds, offering accommodation, guidance and practical help during times of crisis.
Jamie Vittles, Chief Executive of Exeter City Community Trust, said: “Homelessness is a growing issue in our region and far too many people are facing uncertainty about where they will sleep each night. Through our Supported Housing programme, we provide safe accommodation, guidance and practical support to help people rebuild their lives.
“The Big Sleep Out is a powerful way for people to stand in solidarity with those experiencing homelessness, while raising vital funds to help us continue this essential work.”
Participants will spend the night sleeping outdoors at St James Park, gaining a small insight into the challenges faced by people who sleep rough every night. Those taking part are encouraged to bring warm clothing, a sleeping bag and plenty of determination.
Jamie added: “The Big Sleep Out not only raises crucial funds, it also raises awareness of homelessness in our city. Every person who takes part is helping to change lives.”
It costs £15 to register, and participants are encouraged to raise £100 or more through sponsorship.
