Okehampton GC in full bloom
It is cold, wet and windy, pretty much the worst time of year to be playing golf, but spring is not too far away and the lush fairways and greens of Devon are awaiting our return.
To get you in the mood, we are taking on the challenge of building the ultimate golf course, but there are strict rules to this game.
We can only use a golf course once and their chosen hole number must correspond to the actual hole on that course. For example, the ultimate opening hole in Devon must also be the opening hole on that chosen course, and then the same course cannot be used again throughout the round.
Your challenge this summer is to play them all!
The ultimate 6th hole in Devon golf
#6 – Okehampton Golf Club – Par 4
The sixth at Okehampton GC is around 353 yards from the men’s tees (varies slightly by tee) and usually played as a longish par 4. This hole plays significantly uphill, so it often feels longer than the yardage suggests, particularly when the prevailing wind is against you.
The fairway is tree-lined on both sides, creating a relatively narrow corridor from the tee. There’s a prominent oak tree in the middle of the fairway; a good line off the tee is to play over the middle of this oak to find the optimal landing area. Accuracy off the tee is key — stray shots can be blocked by trees or leave difficult recovery lies.
The green sits on a slope and is tiered left to right, meaning the level you find yourself on matters a lot for your putt. Being on the correct tier is very important — being above or below the hole on the wrong tier can lead to tricky, multi-break putts.
Because of the uphill nature, wind exposure, and green contours, this hole carries a stroke index of 2, marking it as one of the toughest on the course. Given the length, slope, and tricky putting surface, a par here is an excellent score and well worth fighting for.
If you’re planning a round or preparing to play this hole, focus on good position off the tee, keep the ball in play down the fairway, and give yourself the best chance of hitting the correct tier on the green — that’s the recipe for scoring well here.
Honourable Mention
The sixth hole at Thurlestone GC is a cracking little par 3 that punishes any inaccuracy, but even if your ball is wallowing in the sand, the beautiful coastal views that make this course so special are on full display with this hole.
