The ultimate fantasy golf course in Devon takes on a long third hole

It is cold, wet and windy, pretty much the worst time of year to be playing golf, but spring is not too far away and the lush fairways and greens of Devon are awaiting our return.

To get you in the mood, we are taking on the challenge of building the ultimate golf course, but there are strict rules to this game.

We can only use a golf course once and their chosen hole number must correspond to the actual hole on that course. For example, the ultimate opening hole in Devon must also be the opening hole on that chosen course, and then the same course cannot be used again throughout the round.

Your challenge this summer is to play them all!

The ultimate 3rd hole in Devon golf

#3 – Sidmouth Golf Club – Par 4

The third hole at Sidmouth Golf Club is widely regarded as one of the most challenging holes on the course, demanding accuracy and thoughtful club selection from the tee to the green.

This par-4 measures approximately 434 yards from the White tees (with similar distances from other tees), making it a long and testing hole early in the round.

Tee Shot: The ideal drive is hit towards a lone tree in the fairway, which serves as a strategic aiming point. Positioning your ball short of or slightly beyond this tree provides a much better angle for the second shot. Missing the fairway and finishing behind the tree can leave a difficult line into the green, so precision off the tee is essential.

Second Shot: The approach tends to be a longer iron or fairway wood for many golfers, and you’ll be aiming for a relatively small, sloping green. The green sits close to trees on the left, increasing the penalty for misdirected approaches.

The green itself is known for its subtle slopes and size, perched close to tree lines that can impact ball flight and roll. Shots that miss left risk being blocked by trees or leaving tricky recoveries, so accuracy and course management are crucial to scoring well.

Overall, the third hole blends length, strategic positioning and a demanding approach into a scenic but testing hole that many players mark as a turning point early in the round at Sidmouth
