Caldwell frustrated by defeat

Gary Caldwell says there are no excuses

Exeter City manager Gary Caldwell voiced his disappointment after watching his side slip to a 2-1 defeat against Mansfield Town at St James Park.

Josh Magennis’ penalty looked to have given the Grecians a route back into the match, but a late goal condemned them to a second successive league defeat.

“The result was not good enough and neither was the performance,” Caldwell admitted. “We were ok for 20 or 25 minutes but we didn’t want to run, we didn’t want to play at speed, and then we gave away a really poor goal from a set-piece.”

The manager felt his side squandered opportunities to take control. “The second half does not get much better, but we did manage to find some momentum and looked like winning. We should never lose from that position. There were too many mistakes, too many poor performances, and we got what we deserved.”

Caldwell also urged his players to move on from last weekend’s highs. “I’m sick of hearing about last Saturday – but last week was last week and we have lost two games since then. We all have to wake up and know that the next game is the most important. Too many people are still thinking about last weekend and we have thrown two games away.”
