Exeter City have confirmed their first signing of the summer, with defender Luca Woodhouse joining on a two-year deal, which includes an option for a third.
The 20-year-old left-footer, released by Wycombe Wanderers at the end of last season, adds depth and versatility to Gary Caldwell’s squad. Woodhouse can play as a left centre-back, in a back three, at left-back or even in central midfield.
His most recent loan spell at Aldershot Town saw him make 20 appearances and score once, ending the season with an FA Trophy win.
“Luca’s someone we’ve tracked closely,” said Caldwell. “He brings flexibility, and his experience in the National League and League One gives him a solid platform to step up. We see him developing into a key player.”
Woodhouse began his senior career at Tonbridge Angels before earning a move to Wycombe in 2022 after impressing during a trial. He gained experience on loan at clubs including Slough Town, Worthing and Dagenham & Redbridge before enjoying a strong second half of the season with Aldershot.
“I had a great chat with the manager, and I was sold straight away,” Woodhouse said. “I’m buzzing to be here and can’t wait to get going.”
He joins the Grecians ahead of the start of pre-season, with fitness testing already underway at the Cliff Hill training ground and Woodhouse is eager to hit the ground running.
“I’m looking forward to meeting the lads and getting to work. Today’s testing, but I can’t wait for the football to start.”
Describing himself as a player, Woodhouse said: “As a defender you’ve got to defend first – win your duels, be aggressive. But I also like to get on the ball, break lines and play forward when the time’s right.”
The signing follows a period of transition off the pitch for the club, with Nick Hawker stepping down as chair of the club board and Joe Gorman departing as chief executive.
Meanwhile, midfielder Reece Cole is back and focused on a big campaign. Speaking after day one of pre-season, he said the squad were easing in with testing before the hard work begins.
“I’ve done the work over the summer and want to come back stronger,” said Cole. “Last season wasn’t what I wanted, but this is a fresh start and a big year for me.”
City’s preparations are in full swing, with the first pre-season fixtures set to begin in early July.
