Exeter City have confirmed that midfielder Caleb Watts has turned down a new contract with the club and opted to join another League One team, Plymouth Argyle.

The Grecians described their offer as “fair and competitive,” but acknowledged that they were unable to match the financial package proposed by another club.

“As a supporter-owned club with a unique and sustainable model, we take great pride in consistently competing at this level despite operating with one of the smallest budgets in the division,” the club said in a statement.

Caleb joined City in September 2023 following a difficult period with injuries. Thanks to the support of the club’s coaching and medical teams, he made over 1,500 minutes of senior football this season - his highest total in any campaign to date.

City expressed disappointment that Watts chose not to stay: “While we understand this is an offer Caleb could not refuse, we are disappointed he has decided not to repay the commitment and faith shown to him during his time at the club.”

Earlier this year, in January 2025, Watts had signed a short-term extension until the end of the 2024/25 season, telling supporters it was an “easy decision” and that he hoped to repay the club’s faith.

“I just want to play well, score goals and do well for myself and the club and repay the faith,” he said at the time.

Watts made a dream debut in red and white, scoring the winning goal against Cheltenham Town just 24 hours after signing. He went on to play 30 times for the club, scoring twice and providing several assists. His high-energy performances quickly made him a fan favourite at St James Park.

Manager Gary Caldwell praised the 23-year-old’s progress earlier in the season, saying: “Caleb has done brilliant in the last couple of months. It is testament to him and the fitness staff.”

Despite those hopes for a longer-term stay, Watts has now made the decision to continue his career elsewhere.
