Attacking midfielder George Birch has signed his first professional contract with Exeter City after progressing through the academy from under-14 level.
Exeter City have confirmed that George Birch has signed his first professional contract with the club.
The talented attacking midfielder, who has been part of the club’s academy since under-14 level, will join Gary Caldwell’s first team squad when pre-season begins next month.
“It feels amazing, because it is what I have been working towards the last two years,” Birch told the City website.
“To finally be offered a professional contract, I'm so proud to be honest. It hasn't quite sunk in yet - it doesn't quite feel real!”
Having arrived from Yeovil Town, Birch’s development through the Exeter academy has included spells playing down an age group to build his physical strength. His creative flair and technical ability have since caught the eye of both academy and first-team coaching staff.
“I like to get on the ball and drive at players, create goals the best I can and sometimes come deep to pick up the ball,” he said.
“I see myself most in that number 10 position, where I can really get shots off and make things happen.”
City boss Gary Caldwell praised Birch’s progress but noted that the step up to senior football will be a major test.
“George hasn't spent as much time with us, and it's a big step up to first team football,” Caldwell said.
“So it's a big summer for him to come in ready to hit the ground running.”
Academy Director Arran Pugh added that Birch’s resilience and mindset had impressed the club throughout the season.
“George had a few injuries this season but has shown great ability and a strong mindset to bounce back. He’s impressed us with his creativity, technical skills and football intelligence.”
Birch becomes the latest in a long line of academy graduates to earn a senior contract at Exeter City, as the club continues to prioritise development and opportunity for young players.
