Long-serving Exeter Chiefs hooker joins Gloucester

Exeter Chiefs have confirmed a series of squad updates ahead of the 2025/26 season, including contract renewals, exciting new arrivals and a fond farewell to a long-serving front-rower.

Back-three utility Dan John has committed his future to Exeter Chiefs by signing a new deal to stay at Sandy Park. The 23-year-old, who joined from Millfield School in 2020, is eager to enjoy an injury-free run and further establish himself in the senior side.

“It feels brilliant to be staying at the club,” John said. “It’s nice to see other boys my age sticking around too - we’re really trying to build something here.”

A former Wales age-grade international, John made his Chiefs debut in 2021 and played a key role in the club’s 2022/23 Premiership Rugby Cup final win over London Irish. Known for his versatility and strong boot, he can cover wing, full-back and centre.

Rob Baxter said: “He’s a player who is still improving and we haven’t yet seen him at his prime. He gives us good strength in depth and we’re hoping for more big performances to come.”

Hooker Jack Innard will depart at the end of the season, joining Gloucester after nearly a decade with the Chiefs. The 28-year-old made 83 appearances and scored 14 tries in all competitions during his time at Sandy Park.

Innard first pulled on the Exeter shirt at the age of 21, making his debut in the Anglo-Welsh Cup against Cardiff Blues around the 2016/17 season. Having progressed through the club’s Academy system via Truro College and a loan spell with Cornish Pirates, the Cornishman became a well-respected squad member and fan favourite.

“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my years as a Chief,” Innard said. “Lifting the Premiership Rugby Cup as captain was a highlight. I’d like to thank all my teammates, coaches and the fans - it’s been an unforgettable time.”

Director of Rugby Rob Baxter added: “Jack’s been a valuable part of the squad through a successful period in our history. We wish him all the best at Gloucester.”

In the women's squad, England U20s back-row Gabriella Nigrelli is joining from Bristol Bears. A powerful No. 8, Nigrelli is seen as a long-term successor to USA international Rachel Johnson, who recently retired from the PWR.

Nigrelli, who recently completed a master’s degree in sports management, played 33 games for Bears and brings a dynamic presence in open play, with added versatility at the lineout and from the kicking tee.

Coach Steve Salvin said: “We’re over the moon to welcome Gabriella. She’s young, powerful, and ambitious — we believe she has huge potential.”

Fly-half and centre Liv McGoverne has extended her contract with Exeter Chiefs Women, continuing her second spell at the club into 2025/26. After returning from New Zealand in 2024, McGoverne led the league in kicks in play and was the Chiefs’ top points scorer with 55.

“I have loved being back with Chiefs this season. It really feels like a home away from home,” she said. “Re-signing was an easy decision because I love playing alongside all the girls here.”

Steve Salvin added: “Liv has shown her value at both 10 and 12 this season. Her kicking game continues to improve, and her calm presence is a huge asset to the squad.”
