Exeter City has confirmed that promising midfielder Liam Oakes has signed his first professional contract with the club.
The 18-year-old, who joined the Grecians’ academy as an under-9, will make the step up to the first team this summer.
Known for his versatility, Oakes can also operate on the right flank and has already made four senior appearances under Gary Caldwell this season.
He made his debut in the opening fixture against Walsall and has also featured in Exeter’s impressive Premier League Cup campaign, netting a stunning goal from the edge of the box against Bristol City as the under-21s went unbeaten in the group stage.
"I'm buzzing to be honest with you," said Oakes. "It's what you dream of when you're a kid – becoming a professional footballer."
Currently on loan at Plymouth Parkway alongside fellow academy graduate Tom Dean, Oakes is gaining valuable experience in men’s football.
"The physical side for me is massive," he added. "Playing with men every week makes it very beneficial for me because it shows what level I need to get to physically. The men’s side makes me have to be better – it gets shown if you're not up to that level in that league.
"I need to come back for pre-season as fit as I can, ready to go, and kick on from there."
Oakes’ progress is another success story for Exeter City’s youth system, which continues to provide a clear path from academy to first team.
