Exeter City beat Shrewsbury but Argyle suffer painful loss

Exeter City eased their relegation fears with a vital win over bottom club Shrewsbury Town but Plymouth Argyle are in serious trouble after losing 3-0 at home to Sheffield Wednesday.

The Grecians had to withstand some early pressure, Luca Hoole fizzing a shot inches over in the opening minute, before Caleb Watts twice threatened to breach the Shrews.

Exeter were awarded a penalty just before the half-hour, Pat Jones felled in the box, but Josh Magennis was denied by an excellent save from Jamal Blackman. Thankfully, the disappointment disappeared within a minute.

The subsequent corner was met by the head of Alex Hartridge and Watts applied the final touch for a crucial opener. The Grecians confirmed victory with a fabulous volley from Demetri Mitchell early in the second half and a win that lifts City seven points clear of the drop zone.

Sadly for Argyle, they sunk to the bottom of the Sky Bet Championship with a lacklustre showing at Home Park.

An own goal from Nathaniel Ogbeta set the tone for Argyle and they fell further behind through a close-range finish from Callum Paterson. Sheffield Wednesday sealed the win with a fine finish by Djeidi Gassama.

Torquay United won 1-0 at Tonbridge Angels to keep up their promotion hopes from the National League South.
