Exeter City kick off 2025 with a challenging trip to Adams Park on New Year’s Day to face third-placed Wycombe Wanderers in League One action.
The 3pm clash comes just a month after the two sides played out an entertaining 2-2 draw at St James Park.
City enter the game in high spirits following a dramatic 4-4 comeback at Crawley Town, where the Grecians fought back from 4-1 down to secure a point, capping off a successful seven-point week.
Wins at Burton Albion and against Bristol Rovers earlier in December further boosted their momentum.
Wycombe, meanwhile, suffered their first league defeat since August in their last outing, falling 2-1 to Charlton Athletic.
Despite the setback, the Chairboys remain in the promotion hunt, sitting just two points off the League One summit.
Reflecting on the challenge ahead, Exeter City First Team Coach Dan Green praised Wycombe’s consistency but remains optimistic. “They’ve been an incredibly consistent outfit,” he said. “They’ve got a strong squad, they’re able to rotate and put different players in.
“It’ll be another tough test, but when we played them here, it also showed that when we’re at our very best, there’s nothing for us to be afraid of.”
City’s recent match against Wycombe gave them valuable insight into their opponents. “You can watch an opposition, but once you’re in the game, you get a feel for their individuals and the way they want to play,” Green added.
The focus now, he said, is on ensuring the team is fully prepared for the New Year’s Day encounter: “The biggest thing we can do now is recover physically and emotionally to ensure that we’re at our very best when we go into that game.”
Striker Millenic Alli, who has been in red-hot form with three goals in the last three games, including a crucial equaliser against Crawley, echoed Green’s sentiments.
“I’m grateful I’m in the right places at the right time and try to take as many chances as possible,” said Alli, who now has eight goals this season.
City’s players will spend New Year’s Eve away from home in a hotel, but Alli sees it as an opportunity to build team spirit. “We’ve got to take from what we can,” he said. “We’re going to be with the lads. It’s going to be a lot of togetherness, and we’ve got to take that into the game.”
With Wycombe eager to bounce back and City looking to continue their impressive form, the stage is set for a thrilling start to 2025 in Buckinghamshire.
