Exeter City is thrilled to announce that defender Jack Fitzwater has signed a new contract, extending his stay with the Grecians until the end of the 2026/27 season.
Fitzwater, who joined the club in September 2023 following his departure from Livingston, has made 16 first-team appearances to date. This season, he has featured in nine matches, including Tuesday night’s 2-2 draw against Wycombe Wanderers.
Jack has been instrumental in Exeter City’s success across various competitions, playing a significant role in their perfect record in the Vertu Trophy and contributing as an overage player in the Premier League Cup U21 team, where the squad currently sits atop their group.
Speaking about his new deal, Jack expressed both gratitude and ambition: "I'm delighted. It happened quickly, and I'm really happy. I cannot wait for the next couple of years. As a professional, you always have to be ready to take your chance. I've enjoyed playing in the EFL Trophy and want to establish myself as a regular starter in the league going forward.”
Fitzwater also spoke about the importance of mentoring younger players: "It's been great to help those younger players coming through. I know when I was younger, I looked up to established players. I try to do the same for others while learning from them too."
Manager Gary Caldwell praised Fitzwater’s professionalism and potential, describing him as a key figure in the club’s long-term plans: "Since Jack has come in, he hasn't played as much as he'd like, but his character, personality, and performances have been exceptional. He’s the type of player we want to build the team and squad around. Offering him a new deal was a no-brainer.”
Caldwell also highlighted Fitzwater’s resilience and determination, adding: "We’ve secured longer contracts for players like Jack Aitchison and Imi Niskanen, and Jack fits into that category. We’re delighted to have him on board for the future."
Reflecting on his journey, Fitzwater acknowledged the club’s trust in him: “I’m really grateful that the club and the gaffer have put this trust in me, it is a bit unusual where a player isn't playing and gets a contract extension, but I think the way I train and the way I’m ready and always ready to play, I think I’ve kind of earned this one"
Jack also shared a personal update, noting that he’s a year into managing his colitis diagnosis and feels healthier than ever.
With his commitment secured, Fitzwater looks poised to play a vital role in Exeter City’s ambitions for the seasons ahead.
