Grecians undone at Wrexham

The Hollywood story at Wrexham FC now includes a short scene on an efficient 3-0 defeat of Exeter City amid the wind and rain of Storm Bert.

The Grecians arrived at the club owned by movie stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney looking to extend a four-game unbeaten run but that ambition soon looked forlorn, Wrexham storming in front with a Max Cleworth header on seven minutes.

Wrexham had further chances before Ollie Palmer nodded in the second on 25 minutes and there wasn’t a great deal to cheer all day for the travelling fans. Ollie Rathbone completed the Wrexham win on 72 minutes and Exeter have another big challenge on Tuesday evening, when promotion-chasing Birmingham City visit SJP.

Exeter City manager Gary Caldwell told BBC Radio Devon: “I thought first half the physicality of the game and the speed of the game, we didn’t get to that early enough.

“We started well but gave away too many corners and too many attacking opportunities to Wrexham because of our lack of intensity and press, lack of physicality in duels across the pitch.

“Second half I’ll give them credit – we passed the ball better and understood what we needed to play through them better without really creating enough.

“The players kept going and the players were fighting against a really strong team and strong club at this level.”
