Exeter City climb to fourth and set clean sheet record

Gary Caldwell has celebrated a century of matches as Exeter City manager with a win that lifts the Grecians up to fourth in Sky Bet League One.

Travelling to Shrewsbury Town for a Thursday night clash in front of the TV cameras, Exeter quickly asserted their authority, grabbing the lead on nine minutes, when Kamari Doyle pounced on a defensive error to fizz a low drive into the bottom corner.

The Shrews responded with a spell of pressure and Exeter goalkeeper Joe Whitworth, on loan from Crystal Palace, produced a fine double save on his way to setting a club record six straight clean sheets.

The Grecians restored control of the game in the second half and thoroughly deserved their decisive second goal, scored by Josh Magennis arriving at the far post.

City can now enjoy a weekend’s rest before the visit of Reading on Tuesday evening.

Caldwell told the club website: "That has taken us to fourth, but like I have just said to the players, we haven't even scratched the surface of our potential with this team.

"Joe Whitworth is just doing his job, and I can't speak highly of him. He is a sensational character, for someone so young his mentality and professionalism has been first class. Even early when he made mistakes, we always had belief in him.”
