Solitary strike from Ryan Woods earns victory over Cambridge

Only goal difference is keeping Exeter City out of the play-off positions in Sky Bet League One after a landmark goal from Ryan Woods earned the Grecians a 1-0 victory at home to Cambridge United.

Woods last scored in 2017, helping Brentford to beat Leeds United 3-1 in the Championship, and he finally rediscovered those shooting boots after 23 minutes at St James Park, fizzing a super finish beyond Cambridge goalkeeper Vicente Reyes.

In truth, it was the one moment of attacking quality from an Exeter side that struggled to find their attacking rhythm, instead relying on disciplined and compact defending to secure maximum points.

Cambridge dominated the second-half chances and should have got something from the game, but were wasteful in front of goal, and Exeter can now enjoy a weekend off before travelling to Shrewsbury on October 17.

City manager Gary Caldwell told the club website: "A lot of the players were playing on a game too many, and you could see that in the second half.

"I thought Sonny Cox was outstanding in the second half when he came on, and Jack Fitzwater showed what a model professional he is and showed why he trains every day at the level he does. He was outstanding in the game. You have to train at an intensity and a level so that when you are needed, you can come on and produce.

"Plenty of individuals have to do better, because at the moment we're getting by, but only just scraping by. We have to be better in the longer term as we are dicing with death at the moment, but I am so happy for the players, the result, and the effort that is being put in."
