Goalless draw for Exeter City at Wigan Athletic

It was a satisfactory return to the scene of his finest triumph for Exeter City manager Gary Caldwell, as his side recorded a solid 0-0 draw at Wigan Athletic to remain mid-table in Sky Bet League One.

Caldwell famously helped the Latics to victory in the 2013 FA Cup Final and was greeted with a warm welcome by the home fans, but Exeter’s point on the day was largely down to stoic defending and one sensational save from goalkeeper Joe Whitworth.

"We just lacked a little bit of cutting edge today and just didn't look like ourselves in possession, which can happen," Caldwell told the club website.

"He [Whitworth] has been brilliant for us in terms of personality and how we can build through him, using his quality in his feet.

"But goalkeepers are there to keep the ball out of the net, as Roy Keane would say, he is just doing his job.

"It was a fantastic save but it was the only big save he had to make, he's just doing his job."

There was little on offer in a tight first period, Whitworth producing a duo of solid blocks, while the troops in front of him failed to find any rhythm in their attacking work.

Despite struggling to create chances, Kamari Doyle firing wide from one rare opportunity. The big moment of the game arrived in the closing minutes, when former Grecian Will Aimson steered a header goalwards, only to be denied by an outstanding full-stretch save from Whitworth.
