Grecians too strong for their lunchtime visitors

After late heartbreak away to Blackpool seven days ago, Exeter City enjoyed some September sunshine with a confident 2-0 victory over a lacklustre Stevenage at St James Park.

Goals from Ed Francis and Kamari Doyle did the job for City, who never really looked under threat in the lunchtime fixture.

Doyle, who was a menace all afternoon, created the opener with a fizzing corner on nine minutes that fell nicely for Francis to force the ball over the line from close range.

The Grecians kept up their momentum in a controlled first period and secured the comfort of a second goal immediately after the restart, Doyle spearing a super finish into the roof of the net after a terrific pass from Ilmari Niskanen.

Exeter continued pressing for a third goal against an outclassed Stevenage, Millenic Alli heading inches over before the visitors managed their first shot on target in the final minute.

City manager Gary Caldwell told the club website: "We knew the game would be awkward, we knew it would be full of chaos, full of first contacts, second balls.

"We tried our best to play football and we had our moments where we played some really good football, scored from a set piece again, which is always pleasing for the staff and analysts.

"All credit to them."
