Caldwell says team can be even better after win

A happy Gary Caldwell after his team's 1-0 victory

Gary Caldwell has given his thoughts as Exeter City kicked-off their Sky Bet League One 2024/25 season with a 1-0 win against newly-relegated Rotherham United at St James Park.

Caleb Watts' chested finish just 90 seconds after being introduced from the bench, from a sublime Johnly Yfeko cross, was enough for City to make it eight opening day matches unbeaten.

"I actually said to the players I think we can be better, but I asked them to play with courage and personality and I thought they were incredible," Gary said.

"We played with an identity and a belief in that identity, but it always felt like a 1-0 game and Rotherham were always in the game.

"We created chances and scored a fantastic goal and although we were hanging on in the end, I could not be happier with the team. But this is only the start and it's a long ten months."

"To a man, the performance levels were outstanding."
