Exeter City Manager Gary Caldwell sees room for improvement
Exeter City ended the season with a 2-1 defeat at home to Oxford United, who in turn secured a play-off spot.
Oxford took a two-goal advantage into the break with Mark Harris and Cameron Brannagan finding the net.
Millenic Alli headed in from a corner to halve the deficit as it looked as though City's comeback might be on, but they were unable to complete the comeback.
Whilst the final result did not fall in City’s favour, there was a lot to be optimistic about in Exeter as the club looked forward to the next season in League One, finishing this season on a strong 61 points and in 13th position.
After the match, City manager Gary Caldwell said there were lessons to be learned: "The first half was really disappointing, and I blame myself first of all as the shape wasn't right," he told reporters.
"Oxford were very resilient and had so much to play for so all credit to them. We just lacked what we've had in recent weeks. We set up in 4-2-2-2 with two number 9s and hadn't tried that before and we didn't have enough width up the pitch.
"In the second half we changed things and were much better, but when you give a play-off team a two goal advantage, you are left with a lot to do. That is something we can improve on next season."
