The winter skin Commandments, according to an Exeter expert

Pradnya from Skin Southwest shares essential advice on keeping your skin hydrated, protected, and glowing through the colder months

The winter skin Commandments, according to an Exeter expert

Winter can be a challenging season for your skin. The cold weather, low humidity, and indoor heating can strip moisture from your skin, leaving it dry, irritated, and prone to cracking. However, with a few adjustments to your skincare routine and some mindful habits, you can maintain healthy, glowing skin throughout the colder months.

1. Moisturise Regularly

Cold weather depletes your skin of its natural moisture, so it's essential to replenish it with a good moisturizer. Look for a product that contains hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, or ceramides.

For extremely dry skin, opt for heavier creams or ointments rather than lotions. I love the range from US based Image Skincare, they have different ranges available for different ages and skin types – from the organic Ormedic range right through to Ageless and Vital C. I also love their treatments – which we offer in clinic at Skin Southwest.

2. Stay Hydrated

While it's easy to remember to hydrate during the summer, people often overlook this in winter. Drinking plenty of water helps keep your skin hydrated from the inside out. Herbal teas and warm water with lemon can be comforting and hydrating alternatives during the cold months.

3. Use a Humidifier

Indoor heating can make the air in your home very dry, which can lead to parched skin. A humidifier adds moisture back into the air, helping to prevent your skin from drying out. Place one in your bedroom to benefit from it while you sleep, nighttime is also the best time to use some additional hydrating skincare products, I always use something on my lips - good old fashioned Vaseline will do!

4. Don’t Skip Sunscreen

Even in winter, your skin is exposed to UV rays. Snow can reflect up to 80% of the sun’s rays, increasing your exposure. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 to protect your skin, especially if you’ll be outdoors.

5. Gentle Cleansing

Switch to a gentle, hydrating cleanser to avoid stripping your skin’s natural oils. Avoid hot water, which can further dry out your skin. Instead, use lukewarm water for washing your face and hands.

6. Exfoliate Wisely

Exfoliation is essential for removing dead skin cells, but overdoing it can damage your skin’s protective barrier. Use a gentle exfoliant once or twice a week to keep your skin smooth and promote healthy cell turnover.

7. Protect Your Skin Outdoors

When venturing out in the cold, wear gloves, scarves, and other protective clothing to shield your skin from harsh winds and freezing temperatures. Use a lip balm with SPF to prevent chapped lips.

8. Pay Attention to Your Diet

A diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, and vitamins can improve your skin’s health. Include foods like salmon, walnuts, berries, and leafy greens to nourish your skin from within.

I love cooking at home and meal prepping for the week. If I don’t have time for that I love a healthy homemade soup from Chandos Deli or takeout from Itsu – to get my omega 3 fix from their salmon box.

9. Avoid Harsh Products

Fragrances, alcohol-based toners, and other harsh ingredients can irritate your skin. Opt for fragrance-free, hypoallergenic products that are gentle on your skin.

10. Consult a Dermatologist

If you experience persistent dryness, redness, or irritation, consult a dermatologist. They can provide personalised advice and recommend products tailored to your skin type.

Alternatively often a beauty therapist or aesthetician can help – we offer free consultations at Skin Southwest and have many non- invasive and affordable skin therapies available including our LED light therapy. Alternatively there are lots of at home devices now available so you can enjoy from the comfort of the sofa!

By incorporating these tips into your daily routine, you can combat the challenges of winter weather and keep your skin looking and feeling its best. Embrace the season with confidence, knowing your skin is well cared for!
