‘Inspires me to keep going’ - Exeter sister’s London Marathon for 'life-changing' charity

Delfina Bounsall is training for the London Marathon, saying the support for her sister "inspires me to keep going."

A woman from Devon is taking on the London Marathon to thank a specialist charity for the "transformative" support given to her sister.

Delfina Bounsall will run the 26.2-mile course in April to raise funds for InFocus, an Exeter-based charity supporting young people with vision impairment and complex disabilities.

Her sister, Sienna, is currently a student at the charity’s specialist further education college, where she is learning essential skills for adulthood.

'Watching her grow'

Delfina said the support her sister receives has had a profound impact on their family.

"The learning opportunities and specialist support Sienna receives at InFocus have been completely life-changing," she said.

"Watching her grow into a confident, independent young woman is something I can hardly put into words."

She added that the thought of her sister’s progress is what keeps her motivated during the difficult miles of marathon training.

Specialist Support

InFocus Charity is the only provider in the UK specifically focused on the combined challenges of vision impairment and additional disabilities.

The college provides a tailored curriculum designed to help students develop:

  • Communication and self-advocacy

  • Independence and practical daily skills

  • Work-related experience

Catherine Scott Baker, Principal at InFocus College, said finding the right provision for children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) can often be "overwhelming" for families.

"When a young person’s needs are properly understood and supported, learning can truly flourish," she said.

"Sienna’s journey is a wonderful example of what is possible, and we’re proud to see it inspire Delfina."

All money raised by the run will go towards the charity's work in providing residential care, supported living, and education for young people with complex needs.
