Mike Webb, who devoted decades of his life to grassroots football in Exeter and across Devon.

An Exeter man who dedicated decades of his life to grassroots football has been remembered following his death aged 83.

Mike Webb passed away on Saturday 10 January following a short but courageous battle after being diagnosed with leukaemia.

A devoted husband, father and grandfather, he was widely respected in local football across Exeter and the surrounding area.

Mr Webb’s involvement in football spanned decades and levels, from senior local teams to youth development.

He began his playing career with Lympstone before moving on to the Dolphin, where he later became manager during the 1970s.

A knee injury brought his playing days to an early end, but he remained closely involved in management and club support for more than 50 years.

During his time at the Dolphin, the club enjoyed significant local success.

He later managed Alphington for a number of seasons, before moving to Newton St Cyres, a club he held in high regard.

He went on to run Dawlish’s second team and eventually managed Topsham, where he remained deeply involved in both management and behind-the-scenes roles.

Alongside his club work, Mr Webb was actively involved with the Devon FA and attended meetings connected to football administration and development.

He was also a constant presence in youth football, supporting his sons Mark and Kevin and managing sides including Topsham Under-17s.

A GoFundMe page has been set up in Mr Webb’s memory to allow people to make a contribution in remembrance.

The funds will go towards a flower arrangement for the funeral, a lasting tribute, and a donation in his name to ELF Leukaemia Care at the Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital, who provided care in his final weeks.

Those who knew him remember his warmth, humour and generosity.

He had a talent for putting people at ease and supporting others quietly, encouraging without judgement.

He was also a devoted grandfather, spending time helping with swimming, taking his grandchildren to clubs, and making sure they had every opportunity to enjoy the activities they loved.

Mike Webb was a lifelong supporter of Manchester United and a passionate advocate for local football in Exeter.

His contribution to the game, both on and off the pitch, and the impact he had on the community, were reflected in the outpouring of tributes following his passing.
