Buddle Lane gas works continue in Exeter as road closures and traffic lights remain in place

A £253,000 gas network upgrade in the Buddle Lane area of Exeter is progressing well, according to Wales & West Utilities, with a series of road closures and traffic management measures set to continue into March.

The work, which began in October, involves replacing ageing gas pipes to ensure a safe and reliable supply to homes and businesses in the Exwick and Redhills area. 

The project is expected to be completed during March 2026, subject to conditions on site.

Wales & West Utilities has agreed a phased traffic management plan with Exeter City Council to allow the work to continue while minimising disruption.

Rolling traffic lights are currently in place on Buddle Lane and will remain until 2 February.

From 2 to 27 February 2026, Buddle Lane will be closed between its junction with Isleworth Road, while three-way traffic lights will operate on Exwick Road, Redhills and Okehampton Road.

 A further closure is scheduled on Redhills between the junctions with Buddle Lane and Well Park Close from 23 February until 20 March 2026.

The utility company says signage is in place throughout the area and that traffic lights are monitored remotely to help keep traffic moving. 

It has also confirmed that emergency services have been informed of the closures.

Roxanne Whittaker, who is managing the project for Wales & West Utilities, said the work remained on schedule.

“We are making good progress with this project and are on track to finish it during March,” she said. 

“We know that working in areas like this is not ideal, but it is essential to make sure we keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses in the area, and to ensure the network is fit for the future.”

She added that although the gas network is largely underground, it plays an important role in daily life. 

“Whether it’s heating your home, cooking meals or having a hot bath, it’s vital that the gas supply is safe, reliable and there when people need it,” she said.

Wales & West Utilities says the upgraded pipes will not only support current demand but also help prepare the network for the future transportation of greener gases.

The company has confirmed that its customer service liaison team remains in regular contact with residents and businesses affected by the works. 

Traffic flows are being monitored throughout the project, and any changes to traffic management will be communicated through local traffic bulletins, the company’s website and social media channels.
