Matthew Upham, one of the men who went missing during a Christmas Day swim at Budleigh Salterton, has been remembered as a “dear friend” by singer Kate Bush.
In a post on her official website, Bush said she had known Upham for 30 years and described him as “extraordinarily kind, thoughtful and [someone who] lived life to the full.” She added: “He was also a great deal of fun.”
Bush said Upham was a strong swimmer and had a passion for kayaking, noting he “understood that the sea should be respected.” She described his death as “so tragic” and said: “The world has lost someone incredibly special. Thank you Matthew, for being one of the best friends anyone could have.”
Upham’s family confirmed he went missing after the festive swim in stormy seas off Budleigh Salterton, Devon, on 25 December. Emergency services and RNLI crews launched extensive searches, but he has not been found. His family described themselves as “heartbroken” following the incident.
Police continue to appeal for anyone with information about the incident to contact them, quoting log 191 of 25/12/25.
