Exeter College student Oscar Holgate has been crowned Student/Apprentice Chef of the Year at the South West Chef of the Year Awards, one of the UK’s most prestigious culinary competitions founded by acclaimed chef Michael Caines MBE DL.

Now in its 21st year, the competition celebrates the region’s best culinary talent and took place this week at Exeter Golf and Country Club, with the finals hosted at Exeter College.

Competitors were judged by a panel of top chefs, including Nathan Outlaw, Scott Paton, Peter Gorton, Matt Mason and Chris Cleghorn, who praised the skill, creativity and technical ability on display.

Oscar, who is in his second year at Exeter College’s Michael Caines Academy and also works at Glebe House in Southleigh, impressed the judges with a starter of lovage brill, chanterelles, ginger clams, and mushroom soy beurre blanc, followed by a main course of venison, Romanesco, celeriac, quince purée, pickled blackberry, and port blackberry jus.

Reflecting on his win, Oscar said: “I first entered the South West Chef of the Year competition without any previous competitive cooking to my name, but wanting to push myself out of my comfort zone and try something that would challenge me in the most rewarding way possible. Training to be a chef at Exeter has been a massive confidence boost. I’ve learnt so much in the past year, and it gave me the belief to enter.

“The run-up to the semifinals and finals was intense. I spent a lot of time creating dishes, finding local suppliers, and perfecting my plates. The hardest part was incorporating the compulsory proteins — venison, clams and brill — while keeping the dishes seasonal and local.”

“The day of the competition was incredible. Cooking alongside such talented young chefs and presenting to supportive judges was an unforgettable experience. When my name was announced as the winner that evening, I was completely shocked. It was such a special moment to share with my family, friends and college tutors.”

Oscar said the experience has already opened new doors and strengthened his ambition to build a career in the industry: “Winning the competition is my biggest achievement so far, and it’s already helped me connect with incredible chefs and mentors.”

“I want to thank my family, my college lecturers, and the team at Glebe House for all their support. For anyone thinking about entering — do it. It’s the best way to learn, grow, and push yourself as a chef.”

Michael Caines MBE DL, acclaimed chef and founder of the South West Chef of the Year competition, congratulated all the winners and praised the exceptional standard this year.

He said: “Huge congratulations to all our winners and finalists. The standard this year has been phenomenal, with chefs showcasing their skill, passion and flair using the incredible ingredients our region has to offer.”

“The competition shines a light on the creativity and resilience of our industry and the remarkable talent we have here in the South West.”
