Motorists travelling southbound on the M5 near Exeter are facing significant delays this morning after an earlier accident between junction 28 (A373 Honiton Road, Cullompton / Service Area) and junction 29 (A30 Honiton Road, Exeter / Honiton).

Police have confirmed that a car has collided with the central reservation. 

As of 11:09, two lanes remain closed, causing slow-moving traffic in the area. Lane one has since been reopened, but drivers are advised to expect ongoing congestion while recovery and safety operations continue.

The southbound carriageway was initially fully closed following a serious incident reported around 09:59, disrupting commuters and holiday traffic. Police and highway crews have been on scene, working to clear the accident safely and minimise further delays.

Emergency services are on scene dealing with the incident, and the southbound carriageway remains closed while crews work to make the area safe.

Authorities have advised drivers to be patient and expect delays. Lanes will start to be reopened as soon as it is safe to do so, and further updates will be provided as the situation develops.

Drivers are urged to plan extra travel time, consider alternative routes, and follow live updates from traffic authorities before setting out.
