Exeter’s Cricklepit Suspension Bridge will become a place of remembrance and reflection this month, as bereaved families mark Baby Loss Awareness Week with a striking public ribbon display.
From 9–15 October, blue, pink and white ribbons bearing the names of babies who have died during pregnancy or soon after birth will be tied to the historic bridge, creating a visible and powerful message about an often-silent grief.
The display is both a tribute to much-loved babies and a reminder of the importance of talking about pregnancy and baby loss, which remains one of the most common but least openly discussed bereavements.

Baby Loss Awareness Week, led nationally by the charity Sands, provides space to remember, to support bereaved families, and to call for action to save babies’ lives.
According to Sands, 13 families a day suffer the heartbreak of losing their baby before, during or shortly after birth, with at least 15 per cent of pregnancies ending in miscarriage.
The display has been organised by local Sands supporter Tia Richards, who hopes it will give families in Exeter and across Devon a way to remember their babies together and raise awareness of the impact of baby loss.
“Sadly, pregnancy and baby loss affects families every day and many feel alone in their grief,” Tia said.
“By creating this display in such a central, well-loved part of Exeter, I hope it starts conversations and helps break the silence.
It’s also a chance to raise funds for Sands, so they can continue to support families and campaign for better maternity care.”
Families and supporters are invited to join the ribbon display at 10am on Wednesday 9 October at Cricklepit Bridge. Ribbons and pens will be provided for anyone wishing to add a name in memory of a baby.
Exeter Custom House has given permission for the bridge to be used, ensuring that the display will be in one of the city’s most recognisable spots.
