Residents in Exeter struggling with high energy bills are being encouraged to apply for government-backed funding to make their homes warmer and more efficient this winter.

The Warm Homes: Local Grant, delivered through Energy Saving Devon, opened for applications on 14 September and will run on a first come, first served basis until all places are filled.

The scheme is aimed at privately owned homes, including landlord-let properties, with an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of D, E, F or G.

Eligible households must also have an income of £36,000 or less, although those on higher incomes may still qualify if they receive certain benefits or live in specific postcode areas.

Exeter Community Energy (ECOE) is a charity supporting Exeter households and other regions in Devon.

ECOE Advice told Exeter Today: "We believe that everyone deserves a warm, healthy home. The Energy Saving Devon fund, run by a partner organisation, is a great opportunity for Exeter residents, you could get a comprehensive assessment and upgrade for your insulation and potentially your heating system and ventilation.

A fit out like this will keep your home warm and alleviate damp for a healthier home and will significantly reduce your energy bills. We recommend you move fast; it's a limited opportunity and funding doesn't come about every year."

ECOE Advice services are avaliable year-round. They offer practical advice on reducing energy bills, improving comfort, support accessing grants and financial help.

Officials said demand for the scheme is likely to be high, meaning not all eligible applicants will receive support. Those who are successful will be asked to provide documents to confirm their eligibility.

People who are not eligible, or who miss out on support, may still be able to access help through other schemes, including ECO4.

The council has stressed that residents should act quickly, as there is no guarantee of a second application round until after March 2027.

Further information is available on the Energy Saving Devon website and applications can also be made through GOV.UK.
