Exeter College has been chosen as one of just six further education institutions nationwide to help launch a new national partnership designed to strengthen teaching in 16–19 settings.

The announcement came as the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) unveiled its first-ever guidance tailored specifically for colleges, sixth forms, and other post-16 providers.

The new guide, released this week, sets out practical recommendations to help staff deliver high-quality professional development (PD) that boosts teaching practice and improves outcomes for students.

By joining the EEF’s new Evidence Partnership for the 16–19 sector, Exeter College will play a central role in ensuring the latest research and best practice are shared with teachers and learners across the country.

The partnership will also focus on tackling educational disadvantage, ensuring students from all backgrounds benefit from stronger teaching.

Emily Yeomans, co-CEO of the EEF, said: The 16–19 phase is a pivotal stage for young people – particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds. High-quality, evidence-informed PD, implemented well, is one of the most powerful levers we have to help students succeed. We’re delighted to be working with Exeter College as one of our founding partners.”

The new guide introduces the KEEP framework – a practical model to help staff apply professional development effectively. It emphasises knowledge, engagement, execution, and practice as the core ingredients for sustained improvements in teaching.

Principal and Chief Executive John Laramy said the partnership reflects Exeter College’s commitment to being at the forefront of education: We’re proud to be representing the South West as part of this initiative. It’s an exciting opportunity to shape how evidence is used to improve teaching and learning, not just for our students but across the country.”

Exeter College now joins a founding group that includes Truro & Penwith College, New City College in East London, and colleges in Lancashire, Middlesbrough and Rotherham.

Together, the institutions will collaborate with the EEF to identify shared priorities and embed evidence-based practice across the 16–19 sector.
