Exeter has been named among the top 10 places to live in Devon in the latest Muddy Stilettos poll, landing at number 5.

While it comfortably beats many towns, it was still outranked by Appledore, Topsham, Kingsbridge and Totnes, raising the question: does Exeter deserve to be higher?

According to Muddy Stilettos and local votes, Exeter's strengths lie in its rich mix of culture, green space and excellent amenities.

Exeter benefits from a highly regarded university, strong schools and transport links that connect the city to both the countryside and coast.

For those who want city life without the crowding of big metropolises, Exeter offers both coast and countryside, balancing city buzz with nature. Muddy Stilettos praise Exeter's 'history, culture and proximity to the great outdoors'.

Fellow Devon towns that came above Exeter include Appledore (first place), Topsham (second place), and Kingsbridge (third place), all of which scored highly on community vibe, scenery, boutique food and drink options, and a charming town atmosphere. Appledore, for example, was commended for its quayside character, annual festivals and creative culture.

Given its public services, lifestyle options, accessibility and the pull of its university, may argue that Exeter could well deserve a higher place on this list.

Yet, the towns ahead tend to offer that quaint charm or coastal appeal which some people prioritise over scale.

Whether it's peacefulness, sense of community or ease of access, the debate over what people value seems central to why Exeter sits where it does.
