A University of Exeter researcher’s experimental wildlife film has been shortlisted for one of the industry’s top international honours.
Dan McKay, a multidisciplinary artist and PhD film researcher, co-created Rock Pool, which is nominated for Best Sound at the prestigious Wildscreen Panda Awards – often dubbed the “Green Oscars”.
The 17-minute film offers a sensory journey through kelp forests, scallop beds and UV-lit seascapes, using experimental sound design and layered montage to create “quiet encounters” with marine life.
Produced by SOUP Audiovisual – comprising McKay, cinematographer Adam Radage and sound designer Tom Bosher – the project combines artistic experimentation with ecological insight.
McKay said the nomination, alongside names such as David Attenborough and Netflix, was “a huge milestone” and reflected the team’s aim to inspire awe for overlooked marine worlds.
The Wildscreen Panda Awards take place in Bristol on 22 October.
