Exeter Science Park has paid tribute to its outgoing Chair, Nick Ames, who has stepped down after five years leading the organisation through a period of significant growth and development.

Mr Ames, who is also the CEO of SG Group, oversaw a strategic transformation of the Science Park, helping to strengthen its position as a hub for innovation and high-growth STEMM (science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine) businesses across the South West.

During his tenure, he supported the executive team through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and the delivery of key infrastructure, including the Ada Lovelace and George Parker Bidder buildings.

He also guided the organisation through the financial restructuring process and the development of the net-zero voco Zeal hotel, currently under construction.

With plans now underway to secure £150–£200 million in investment, the Science Park is aiming to complete its long-term development by the late 2030s.

If successful, the expansion could support up to 3,500 jobs and generate £350 million in annual turnover for the region.

Dr Sally Basker, Chief Executive of Exeter Science Park, said: “Nick has brought intelligence, clarity and deep commercial insight to the boardroom. His belief in the power of innovation and entrepreneurship has helped shape an ambitious path forward. On behalf of the board and team, I’d like to thank Nick for his tireless support and wish him all the very best.”

Mr Ames said it had been a privilege to serve as Chair.

“I’m immensely proud of what we’ve achieved together,” he said. “The Science Park plays a vital role in shaping the region’s future economy and supporting brilliant businesses doing world-class work.”

Mr Ames will be succeeded by Dr Eulian Roberts, whose previous leadership roles include Chief Executive of Stirling University Innovation Park, Managing Director of Coventry University Enterprises, and founding Managing Director of Qatar Science & Technology Park.

He has also led international technology development projects in Saudi Arabia and most recently served as Chief Executive of Imperial College ThinkSpace.

Founded in 2015, Exeter Science Park is currently home to 45 organisations, supports more than 750 jobs, and contributes over £50 million in gross value added to the economy each year.
