ALERT: Major road works to cause significant bus delays and disruption in Exeter this summer

Bus services will be severely affected

Major roadworks by Wales & West Utilities in Exeter will cause significant disruption to Stagecoach South West bus servicesfrom 21 July to mid-August, with a further phase due to begin from 15 September.

The works, taking place around Magdalen Road, Fore Street, and Heavitree Road, involve road closures and traffic restrictions that affect multiple key bus routes on the busiest bus corridor in the city.

Peter Knight, Managing Director at Stagecoach South West, said: "We’re working closely with Devon County Council and other stakeholders to minimise disruption and keep our services running as smoothly as possible during these essential works. We’ve developed a number of changes to our network to minimise the disruption caused as far as possible, on what is Exeter’s busiest bus corridor. We thank our customers for their patience and understanding while these roadworks take place."

Summary of Key Service Changes:

  • Service C: Runs between Matford Park & Ride and City Centre only.Sowton Park & Ride users are encouraged to use Honiton Road Park & Ride as an alternative.
  • Service R - Will serve all stops as normal, but the service will operate on a diversion via Barrack Road, Church Lane, and Butts Road.

Passengers may experience slight delays, but all stops remain accessible.

  • Service S: will not serve Heavitree Post Office during the roadworks, but the service will operate on a diversion via Butts Road, Church Lane, and Barrack Road.
  • Service 4: Operating between Exeter St Davids and Cranbrook only and not serve the University of Exeter. Will divert via Barrack Road, Topsham Road, Burnthouse Lane, and Rifford Road. From 21st July 2025, a weekday daytime shuttle service will operate between the University of Exeter and the revised Service 4 route to maintain connectivity. Normal fares apply on the shuttle.

Passengers may purchase a single fare from the University of Exeter to travel anywhere along the Service 4 route, and vice versa, without incurring any additional cost.

This service will continue to serve Honiton Road Park & Ride, providing a reliable option for those switching from Sowton Park & Ride.

  • Service 4A: Will start and terminate in the City Centre and not serve Exeter St. Davids. Will divert via Barrack Road, Topsham Road, Burnthouse Lane, and Rifford Road.

Also operating via Honiton Road Park & Ride for continued accessibility.

  • Services 9/9A and 58: will divert via Barrack Road, Topsham Road, Burnthouse Lane, and Rifford Road.

This revised routing avoids the Heavitree corridor while maintaining coverage for key areas.

  • Services 44/44a: will divert via Pinhoe Road & and Hill Barton Road, between Honiton Road Park & Ride and Exeter Bus Station.

Stagecoach South West encourages all passengers to:

  • Check before you travel
  • Allow extra time for journeys
  • Use alternative Park & Ride sites where necessary
