People in Exeter are being invited to share their views on proposed changes to taxi fares in the city.

Exeter City Council has launched a public consultation following a request from both of the city’s Hackney Carriage Associations to raise maximum tariffs. The last fare increase was approved in 2022.

Under the new proposals, the starting fare (or flag drop) for standard daytime journeys would rise from £2.70 to £3.80, with the cost per mile increasing from £2.50 to £3. These rates would apply between 7am and 7pm, Monday to Saturday.

For journeys between 7pm and 7am and on Sundays, the starting fare would go up from £3.20 to £4.60, and the running mile from £3.10 to £3.80.

Revised charges are also proposed for Bank Holidays, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

The proposed figures represent maximum fares. Drivers are permitted to charge less than the metered tariff, but cannot exceed it.

Anyone wishing to raise objections must do so before 13 July 2025, by emailing nigel.marston@exeter.gov.uk or writing to:
