Drivers in Exeter are being reminded to check their routes this week, with several significant roadworks underway or scheduled across the city.

Devon County Council has shared updates on a series of improvement projects set to impact key routes, including work on major bus corridors and ongoing infrastructure development on the A379 and Chudleigh Road.

Bus corridor improvements

As part of the Bus Service Improvement Plan, night-time works will affect both Pinhoe Road and Heavitree Fore Street:

  • Pinhoe Road bus lanes: Lining work will improve visibility on the inbound bus lanes between Whipton Community Hall and Widgery Road, and from Tarbet Avenue to St Marks Avenue. Lane closures are expected from 6 May for two nights between 7pm and 6am.

  • Heavitree Fore Street: Red surfacing will be applied to enhance bus priority from Butts Road to Church Street. These works are scheduled from 13 May, with overnight westbound closures for two nights.

  • Heavitree North Street junction: Road markings will be updated to improve traffic flow, with a full overnight road closure on 12 May.

A379 widening and Chudleigh Road link

Major construction continues on the new Chudleigh Link Road, a project aimed at supporting new housing developments in South West Exeter.

The scheme includes:

  • A new link road between Chudleigh Road and the A379

  • A signalised junction and associated road widening

  • Carriageway resurfacing and signage upgrades

Night-time road closures and a temporary 30mph speed limit will remain in place throughout the works, which are expected to continue until January 2026.

Elsewhere, highway upgrades are being carried out to support the delivery of 2,500 new homes and over 21 hectares of employment land. Planned works include:

  • Four new signal-controlled junctions on the A379

  • Realignment of Chudleigh Road

  • A new southern spine road south of the A379

  • Improvements to Alphington’s public realm and the Devon Hotel roundabout

Motorists are encouraged to stay up to date with live traffic alerts and consider alternative routes where possible.
