Campaigners fighting to save Northbrook Swimming Pool have renewed their call for Exeter City Council to halt closure plans, citing overwhelming public support and deep concern from residents who rely on the facility.
Over 1,400 handwritten and 847 online signatures have been gathered as part of a growing petition, which locals plan to submit to the council in the coming weeks.
The petition is in response to a consultation launched following the council’s proposal to close the community pool as part of wider budget cuts.
One campaigner told us: “Many of those who use this facility do so because it’s small, local, and quiet – a vital space for people with hidden disabilities or mental health conditions. For some, even attending a focus group is too overwhelming. These voices must still be heard.”
Concerns have also been raised around the consultation process itself, including a low turnout at meetings and a lack of contact with local schools. Residents have asked Exeter City Council to consider email communication for follow-up and to recognise that not everyone is comfortable using phones or attending in-person events, especially when dealing with mental health challenges.
Exeter MP Steve Race said: “I’ve made representations to the Council on behalf of residents about the Northbrook Pool consultation, and will continue to do so. I’m encouraging residents who are interested not just to respond to the consultation, but also to make full use of Northbrook Pool. Community facilities are vitally important, but only when they are well-used.”
Cllr Duncan Wood, Portfolio Holder for Leisure, explained that due to the current pre-election period, he is unable to publicly comment in depth but directed residents to the council's online consultation. He noted: “The decision to close Northbrook Swimming Pool will only be considered after hearing from the community it serves and after assessing the impact of the potential closure on its users.”
Residents say they feel left out of meaningful dialogue and are now forming a Save Our Pool committee. A recent gathering at ISCA Centre drew over 50 supporters, with many expressing frustration over the perceived lack of council engagement. “This isn’t just about leisure,” one local added. “It’s about people, health, accessibility, and community.”
