Local pup Stanley, relaxing at The Lighthouse Cafe Bar in Torquay
The findings come from Sainsbury’s Bank’s new Paws and Playtime report, which explored the emotional and practical realities of “paw-renting” across the UK.
It revealed that both dog owners and child parents spend around ten hours a week on activities like playtime, education, and care - whether that’s a school run or a scenic walkies along the Exe Estuary Trail.
Here in Exeter, the story struck a chord. As reported in our National Pet Day feature, readers shared photos of their beloved animals - many of whom are considered fully-fledged members of the family. Odin, our editor’s rescue staffy, was just one of many four-legged locals enjoying the spotlight this week.
The national study found that over a third (34%) of dog owners said their mental health had significantly improved since bringing a dog into their lives, echoing the 41% of parents who said the same after having children.
And just like with children, parenting styles varied - though the “gentle” approach proved most popular for both camps.
Dog owners were also more likely to meet new people thanks to their pets, with 42% describing their dogs as great conversation starters - a fact anyone who’s walked through Belmont Park on a sunny afternoon will no doubt relate to.
Vicky Yuill, Head of Insurance at Sainsbury’s Bank, said, “Our report reveals some unexpected similarities between raising children and raising dogs. It highlights the deep emotional bonds and significant time commitments experienced by both.”
She added that vet bills can pose a financial challenge, and the bank’s multi-pet discounts and 24/7 vet support aim to help owners manage the costs of caring for their pets.
