Health officials are urging the public to step up hygiene measures as norovirus cases continue to soar across the UK, with a significant rise in searches for 'norovirus symptoms' and reports of an outbreak aboard a cruise ship.

Dr John Burke, Chief Medical Officer at AXA Health, has highlighted five key areas where norovirus can linger and provided essential guidance on managing symptoms.

Five norovirus hotspots to watch out for

  • Washing-up sponges – Sponges in home and communal kitchens can harbour bacteria and viruses. Regularly replacing them and sterilising with hot water can help reduce the risk.

  • Kitchenware – Plates, utensils, and glasses can retain norovirus for up to two weeks if not thoroughly cleaned. Always wash with hot water and disinfectant.

  • Door handles – High-touch surfaces such as door handles must be disinfected frequently with bleach-based cleaners to prevent contamination.

  • Gym equipment – With multiple users throughout the day, gym equipment is a common site for norovirus transmission. Clean equipment before and after use with a strong disinfectant.

  • Towels – Norovirus can survive on fabrics for up to 12 days. Avoid sharing towels and opt for personal or disposable options where possible.

Key symptoms of norovirus

  • Nausea

  • Vomiting

  • Diarrhoea

  • High temperature

  • Headaches

  • Abdominal pain

Dr Burke advises that most cases of norovirus can be managed at home with simple steps:

  • Hydration is key – Drink clear fluids and electrolytes to prevent dehydration caused by vomiting and diarrhoea.

  • Eat when ready – Stick to bland foods such as dry toast or crackers and avoid heavy, fatty, or spicy meals.

  • Rest and recover – Allow the body to heal by getting plenty of rest.

  • Limit contact with others – Stay at home for at least 48 hours after symptoms subside to prevent spreading the virus.

With cases rising nationwide, medical experts stress the importance of maintaining strict hygiene and using bleach-based cleaning products to curb the spread of the virus.
