Cranbrook’s commitment to sustainability has taken another step forward with the planting of thousands of new trees as part of an ongoing environmental initiative.

By the end of this planting season, an additional 3,475 trees will have been added to Cranbrook Country Park, bringing the total number of trees planted in the upcoming season to 5,670.

The project, which began in winter 2024, is part of the town’s wider goal to develop a thriving green environment. Twenty native broadleaf species, including oak, alder, and willow, have been introduced to enhance biodiversity, improve air quality, and support local wildlife.

Cranbrook Town Council secured funding for the initiative through the Forestry Commission’s England Woodland Creation Offer (EWCO) and Devon County Council’s Local Authority Treescapes Fund (LATF). Councillor Les Bayliss, Chairman of Cranbrook Town Council, emphasised the long-term benefits of the project.

“We believe that every tree planted is a step towards a more sustainable and vibrant future,” he said. “Through the dedication of our community, we are not only enhancing our green spaces but also creating lasting benefits for future generations. With an additional 3,475 trees added to Cranbrook Country Park, we improve air quality, support local wildlife, and strengthen our connection to nature.”

The initiative has been a collaborative effort, with local volunteers, schools, and community groups, including Cranbrook and East Devon’s Home Ed communities, playing an active role.

Environmental organisations such as ParkLife SW and The Devon Woods Project have also contributed their expertise.

Sean Webber, Devon Woods Project Manager, praised the project’s impact, stating, “It has been great to work with Cranbrook Town Council and the Ranger to help create new areas of diverse woodland which will benefit wildlife, residents, and future generations.”

Pupils at St Martin’s C of E Primary and Nursery School have also been involved in the tree planting efforts. Forest School Teacher Angela Whitten highlighted the importance of engaging young people in environmental conservation.

“This term, our Year 5 children have been actively involved in planting trees in Cranbrook Country Park,” she said. “They have learnt about how to plant them correctly to ensure that they survive and about the project as a whole. The importance of trees to help both the ecosystem and the sustainability of the country park are high on the agenda.”

Cranbrook Country Park has already been recognised for its environmental efforts, earning the prestigious Green Flag Award in July 2024 and the Saving Devon’s Treescapes Award from Devon Wildlife Trust in August 2024. These accolades highlight the dedication of the town council and the local community in preserving and improving green spaces.

Looking ahead, Cranbrook Town Council is planning more tree planting events and educational programmes to encourage further community involvement.

The initiative aims to ensure that Cranbrook continues to grow as a vibrant and environmentally sustainable town for future generations.
