GWR’s ‘Apprentice Train’ marks milestones with special service

Great Western Railway (GWR) marked a hat-trick of milestones with a special ‘Apprentice Train’ service on 13 February, crewed by current and former apprentices.

The 10.35 service from London Paddington to Exeter St Davids highlighted National Apprenticeship Week, a decade-long partnership with The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE), and the industry’s Railway 200 celebrations.

The initiative showcased the diverse career opportunities within the railway sector, with apprentices performing a variety of roles onboard.

GWR Customer Services Director Rachel Geliamassi emphasised the importance of the event, saying, “The ‘Apprentice Train’ is a fantastic opportunity to highlight the many careers available in the rail industry and celebrate the incredible talent we have within our workforce.”

Sophie Carter, a 21-year-old Aspire Driver Manager Apprentice and Gold DofE Award holder from Plymouth, was the mastermind behind the initiative. She said, “We’re helping to shine a light on the wide range of opportunities available for anyone considering a career in the railway. There are 11 current or former apprentices involved in today’s service, and all of us can vouch for what an exciting industry it is to work in.”

As the train journeyed through 10 stations - symbolising the 10-year partnership between GWR and the DofE - apprentices engaged with passengers, handed out GWR merchandise, and answered questions about railway careers. DofE Youth Ambassadors were also present to advocate for young people and showcase the benefits of the programme.

Since 2015, over 80 GWR apprentices have achieved their Gold DofE Award through DofE Business, which integrates volunteering, physical activities, and leadership skills into workplace training. Another 82 apprentices are currently participating, with more set to join in March.

Alex McDowell, Director of Fundraising at The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, said, “GWR’s young workforce has gone above and beyond in their DofE journeys - volunteering in their communities, fostering their networks, and developing essential skills like leadership, teamwork, and confidence.”

The train’s final stop at Exeter St Davids coincided with the Exeter College Apprenticeship Expo, where GWR was among 50 exhibitors promoting regional apprenticeship opportunities.

John Laramy CBE, Principal and Chief Executive of Exeter College, welcomed the collaboration, saying, “Our partnership with GWR is a fantastic example of how colleges and employers can work together to provide sector-leading apprenticeships.”

GWR has now opened applications for its latest apprenticeship programmes, with vacancies available until mid-March. Those interested in starting a career with GWR can visit their website for more details.
