Exeter is the seventh-best city to live alone in England, with around a third of its residents choosing to go solo, according to new research.
The study, conducted by Opera Beds, examined factors including healthcare access, utility costs, and council tax rates to determine the most suitable cities for independent living.
According to the most recent census, one in three people aged 65 and over live alone in the UK, making access to local healthcare and amenities vital. Exeter’s strong position in the rankings highlights its suitability for solo residents, particularly older individuals seeking an independent lifestyle.
The research found that 32.4% of Exeter households consist of just one person. While the cost of renting a one-bedroom property is relatively high at £1,425 per month, the city offers significant healthcare resources. Exeter boasts 852 hospital beds per 100,000 residents and has 122.6 occupational therapists per 100,000 residents - one of the highest figures in the country.
Life expectancy in Exeter stands at 81.4 years, reinforcing the city’s appeal for those looking to maintain a long and independent lifestyle. However, utility costs in Exeter were among the highest in the study, averaging £401 per month, and single-occupant council tax bills come in at £2,057.39 annually.
Carlisle topped the rankings as the best city for solo living, benefiting from lower rental costs and a high number of occupational therapists. Worcester and York followed in second and third place, respectively.
Exeter’s inclusion in the top ten underscores its reputation as a city that provides a balanced mix of healthcare access, quality of life, and community support for solo residents. The city’s vibrant cultural scene, green spaces, and strong transport links further enhance its attractiveness for those seeking an independent lifestyle.
