Young performers in Devon have the chance to take the stage in Exeter Northcott Theatre’s upcoming production of Romeo & Juliet.
The theatre is holding open auditions in March to cast an ensemble of 15 dancers, aged 18–25, who will perform alongside a professional cast.
The production, running from 2–12 July, marks the Northcott’s first in-house Shakespeare production in over a decade. It will be directed by Martin Berry, the theatre’s Creative Director and Joint Chief Executive, following his five-star (The Stage) world premiere of The Commotion Time in October 2024.
Berry said, “Romeo & Juliet has young people’s experiences at its heart, so I’m thrilled to be offering Devon’s talented young performers the opportunity to perform on our iconic stage in a major production alongside a first-rate professional cast. Putting young people centre stage, in every sense, is a massive part of what we do, and I know their energy and dynamism will take this landmark production to the next level.”
This follows the success of The Commotion Time, which featured a 44-strong community ensemble and choir. One of its performers, Thea Mackney (19), encouraged others to audition: “The Commotion Time was such a brilliant opportunity, and really rewarding to be a part of. If you’re thinking about auditioning for Romeo & Juliet, go for it! You’ll have the best time doing it.”
Workshop-style auditions will be held from 3–7 March, with sign-ups now open until Monday 24 February. Find out more and register here.
