From Beethoven to Churchill and the books that shape our lives, this year’s Budleigh Salterton Literary Festival Spring Weekend is set to be a feast of ideas, history, and storytelling.
Taking place on March 7 and 8 at St Peter’s Church, the festival promises a thought-provoking programme packed with distinguished authors and speakers.
The lineup is nothing short of stellar, with big names bringing big ideas to Budleigh. Expect engaging discussions on politics, music, history, justice, and personal journeys - because what’s a literary festival without a deep dive into the written (and spoken) word?
So, who’s taking the stage?
John Suchet will bring his infectious enthusiasm for Beethoven, sharing fascinating insights into the life and works of the great composer.
Sir Graham Brady, former chairman of the influential 1922 Committee, will reflect on political leadership and the current state of British politics, drawing from his extensive career in Westminster.
Sinclair McKay will introduce Meeting Churchill: A Life in 90 Encounters, offering a fresh perspective on the legendary leader through a series of extraordinary meetings and anecdotes.
Dr Lucy Pollock, author of The Golden Rule: Lessons in Loving from a Doctor of Ageing, will explore how we care for others and navigate ageing with dignity and compassion.
Professor Sarah Churchwell, one of the UK’s leading voices on American politics and society, will tackle what the future holds for the US and its impact on the UK and Europe.
Steve Crawshaw will shine a light on war crimes and global justice with Prosecuting the Powerful, sharing powerful stories of accountability and the pursuit of justice.
Lucy Mangan will take a humorous and insightful look at the books that shape us with Bookish, proving that stories have the power to change lives.
This year’s Spring Weekend is also the first festival programme curated by new Artistic Director, Kate Abbey, marking the start of an exciting new chapter for the event.
Festival committee chair Sue Briggs said: “We’re delighted to welcome these exciting authors to Budleigh Salterton. This Spring Weekend offers something for everyone, with opportunities to hear from exceptional writers who will challenge, entertain, and inspire us.”
