Inspiring story of local cancer survivor, Fran Bullock, in her triumph at the Valmorel Winter Spartan Race
A Exeter woman who overcame breast cancer has completed a gruelling Spartan Race in the French Alps, using the challenge to inspire others facing their own battles.
Fran Bullock, a cancer exercise specialist from Devon, took part in the Valmorel Winter Spartan 5K Sprint last weekend, braving icy conditions and punishing obstacles in a test of physical and mental endurance.
Diagnosed with stage three breast cancer at 39, Fran underwent a mastectomy, chemotherapy, and radiation treatment. She used fitness as a key part of her recovery and now helps others regain strength and confidence after cancer.
“Before cancer, fitness was something I felt I had to do,” Fran shared. “Now, it’s about what I’m capable of achieving - not just in my body but in my mind too.”
As a personal trainer, Fran found empowerment in Spartan Races, known for their extreme physical and mental challenges. After completing her first event in Morzine last summer, she set her sights on the Valmorel Winter Spartan.
“I love the atmosphere, the vibe, and the mix of physical and mental fitness that Spartan races demand,” Fran said. “They’ve helped me feel strong again, even after hitting rock bottom.”
The Valmorel event featured alpine trails, frost-covered obstacles, and freezing winds. Despite the brutal conditions, Fran successfully crossed the finish line.
According to Cancer Research, there are around 56,800 new breast cancer cases in the UK every year, 360 of those being men, that's more than 150 every day (2017-2019).
Spartan Race Directors praised the participants: “Events like this aren’t just about finishing—they’re about breaking through barriers and proving what you’re capable of. Fran’s journey is a testament to the power of resilience, and we’re so proud to have her in the Spartan community.”
Fran’s story has resonated with many in Devon, showing that strength comes not just from the body, but from the mind and heart as well.
