The Met Office has issued an Amber National Severe Weather Warning for wind, alongside new warnings for rain and flooding, with Storm Éowyn set to bring significant disruption to Devon, Cornwall, and Somerset on Thursday and Friday.
Gusts of up to 70-80mph are expected in coastal areas, while heavy rain may result in localised flooding and hazardous travel conditions.
Winds will pick up across the southwest on Thursday morning, peaking at 50-60mph along exposed coasts and hills. By nightfall, heavy rain will sweep in, with 40-60mm expected over higher ground, increasing the risk of surface water flooding.
As Storm Éowyn moves in early Friday, gusts of up to 80mph are forecast for exposed coastal routes and hills, with widespread gales likely to cause travel delays, power outages, and damage to property. Heavy rainfall will persist throughout the day, worsening the potential for localised flooding.
The Met Office has also issued a Yellow warning for rain in the southwest from midnight until 9 am on Friday, while a Yellow warning for winds remains in effect from 5am to 12:00pm.
Mark Nash, Duty Manager at National Highways, advised drivers to prepare for challenging conditions: “We’re expecting strong winds and heavy rain to affect the southwest. Motorists should plan journeys carefully and adjust their driving to suit the weather.”
The Met Office also urged residents to take precautions, including:
- Securing loose outdoor items such as garden furniture.
- Avoiding coastal areas during high winds.
- Staying up to date with travel alerts and weather forecasts.
While winds are expected to ease slightly on Saturday, the southwest is not out of the woods yet. Another low-pressure system is set to arrive on Sunday, bringing further wind and rain into next week.
Residents are encouraged to stay vigilant and check for updates as the region braces for an unsettled and potentially disruptive end to the week.
