The Royal Albert Memorial Museum & Art Gallery (RAMM) in Exeter is continuing its commitment to accessibility with two free relaxed sessions scheduled for this winter and spring. These sessions are designed for people with autism, anxiety, and associated conditions, creating a calm and inclusive environment for visitors to enjoy the museum.

Following the success of previous sessions, including 'Are We Nearly There Yet?' in summer 2024 and 'Brick by Brick' in summer 2023, the upcoming sessions will span the entire museum.

They are set to take place on Tuesday, January 28, from 9:30am to 10:30am (before regular opening hours), and Friday, February 28, from 5pm to 6pm (after regular closing hours).

During these times, visitor numbers will be limited, noise from interactive displays will be reduced or turned off, and lighting will be managed to enhance the sensory experience. Ear defenders will be available on request, and visitors can access a separate calm area if needed.

The museum’s permanent galleries will be fully open during these sessions, as will the RAMM shop. The sessions are open to everyone, regardless of age or additional needs, and families are warmly welcome.

Feedback from previous relaxed sessions highlights their impact on the community. One parent shared, “It’s great to be in an atmosphere of supportive adults, knowing they understand… It’s very isolating to parents [having a child with special needs].” Another said, “It’s good doing things where I’m comfortable and relaxed. Then they’re relaxed. Win-win.”

Jess Cain of SEND Instincts, a SEND & EHCP Knowledge Specialist, praised RAMM’s approach: “My kids love the museum. I find it such a great place for neurodiverse children. It is really accessible and calming.”

These sessions are part of RAMM’s wider commitment to accessibility, which includes staff training in deaf and disability awareness. Additional accessibility features at the museum include wheelchair access, hearing loops, large print captions, audio guides, online trails, autism-friendly visual stories, accessible toilets, baby changing facilities on both floors, and BSL (British Sign Language) videos.

Booking for the relaxed sessions is essential. Free tickets can be reserved, or for more information, email ramm.enquiries@exeter.gov.uk. For full details on RAMM’s accessibility options, click here.
